Last week on October 04th, 2017 Google unveiled pair of wireless headphones called “Pixel Buds” at the Google event. The earbuds are powered by the world’s most widely used translation product – Google Translate.
These wireless earbuds (actually neckbuds) from Google will translate 40 languages in real time i.e. as they are spoken. “It’s like having a personal translator at your side.
During the product event, a live demo of Pixel Buds was showcased with Swedish and English translation.
Many manufacturers have already promised such translators in the past – but the revolution in communication has so far been lacking. Let’s see how Google’s headphone will overcome this and revolutionize the translation, after their most successful translation product – Google Translate.
Pixel buds, a universal translator would be released in November 2017 and works with Pixel 2 smartphone. And Google clearly states that the product is a test. Most importantly, the other person, doesn’t need any phone or earbud to listen or speak. Pixel buds will automatically listen and translate and speaker of Pixel 2 phone, paired with the earbud, will speak out.
The tech industry is full of praises for this personal translator which you can carry and use wherever you go. However human translation will always be more accurate compared to any artificial intelligence powered software product. As AI, at this point, is not technologically superior to understand the cultural complexities and context of spoken language, its grammar, and vocabulary.
Google’s translator headphones are faster and most importantly cheaper compared to other products available in the market or the upcoming ones. The Pixel Buds are available for $159.
For years, the company has been working on its translation software Google Translate, which still leaves something to be desired. Nevertheless, Google is still just a few young startups ahead.
So travelling abroad, listening to non-native news, and so on, Pixel Buds should be a your companion.
