Finally the most awaited smartphone of the year iPhone X was announced on 12th Sep in Cupertino (California, USA) on the tenth anniversary of the iPhone. The story began 10 years back with Steve Jobs on stage. As the Apple’s genius co-founder is still missed by million people across the world, the stage was named in his honor: Steve Jobs Theatre.
New Design
The most attractive highlight of the iPhone X certainly is its new design. Since 2014, Apple had not released an iPhone with significant changes in design. And iPhone lovers really wanted something special from the smartphone maker amidst the hype, the phone generated before launch. But Apple seems to have listened and the wait was over with really an mouth licking design.
The device has a virtually all body built in glass, but still retains a metal frame. The front face of the handset is mostly occupied by the 5.8 inch super retina OLED display (2436 x 1125 and 458 pixel per inch (PPI), sexy rounded corners and a peculiar cut on the top to fit the front camera and some more sensors.
Bye Bye – Home Button
The phone bids adieu to the super sexy home button present in all the previous models and their versions. And it is now the first iPhone with NO physical / capacitive home button.
The new display has increased in size and has almost eliminated the upper and lower edges. Other than that, Apple had to customize iOS 11 especially for the device. To return to the initial screen of the device, for example, user will have to make a gesture in the display from the bottom up. And to multi-task seamlessly, swipe half way up from the bottom and then hold. This will show all the apps which are currently open.
The need of app-switcher is also gone. All that is required is scrolling alongside the bottom of the screen.
Face Is Your ID
And now the super technical surprise which has become the talk of the town is the biometric identification system. Instead of the Touch ID, iPhone X has a Face ID. It identifies details of the user’s face with a series of sensors, which includes the front camera and an infrared camera for depth. Locking & unlocking can be done through facial recognition.
Fooling the system has become extremely difficult and no photos or even Halloween masks or any sci-fi masks created with the best technologies used in Hollywood can dodge it. The system uses machine learning so that, over time, Face ID can easily adapt to changes in the user’s face. That is, if you change your hairstyle, put beard, or change eye glasses, you will not need to re-register biometrics.
This set of sensors for facial tracking can also be used for other applications such as Snapchat or Apple messages.
Wireless Charging
It is also one of the first iPhones to count on wireless charging. It is believed that this is why the manufacturer decided to return to the glass in the back cover. Metal alloys creates problem due to wireless charging.
Dual Camera
The smartphone has a dual camera system, each with 12 MP (f/1.8 + f/2.4) and both with optical stabilization. This is similar to Samsung Galaxy Note 8. In the new iPhone, however, they are used for different things. There are several options for lighting effects, and they can be applied in real time while you frame the images. Apple compares these features with professional lighting conditions.
In fact the phone offers interesting effects, especially the darkening of the user environment. This leaves only your face in focus with a black background.
You can capture 4K video and play that content on the iPhone’s HDR screen, which still has improved stereo sound compared to the previous version of the phone.
So future smartphones from the competitors have too many things to copy from iPhone X.
Augmented Reality
Another important aspect of the new iPhone is iOS 11 with its augmented reality capabilities.
Three colors but too pricey
Apple will only have three colors across the world: black, silver, and gold. And as expected, the price of the most basic unlocked model in the US is $ 999, and the most expensive will be available for $ 1,149. Pre-sale starts on October 27, and actual sales from November 3.
