The Indian startup ecosystem has come a long way and marked impressive growth that has already brought the country to third place in the world, only behind the US & China world’s startup ecosystem.
Facebook, Google, Yahoo — the pillars of the social revolution were all started by college students. The youth-centric startups prevail and are flourishing. A constantly increasing in the percentage of millennials desire to start a business, There cannot be better times than now for engineers to create impact for masses when the speed of technologies advancement is growing exponentially.
Moors law no more seems to be restricted to computing power and spread its wings to many other technological areas. Welcome to the fourth leg of revolution lead by technologies like AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Data Science, Augmented and Virtual Reality, BlockChain, IoT and Robotic Process Automation, etc.
Mobile Internet is adding the momentum further and helping it to reach masses. The knowledge-based society is evolving further as Creativity and Innovation base society. The bigger piece of the onus falls on engineers to take the lead in innovation lead disruptions through startups. The information access is available to individuals at their desktop.
Becoming subject matter expert for self-starters, have become a matter of days. The wide availability of content has empowered individuals like never before. Doable is the mantra these days. It is easier said than done. Are we really equipped to develop the learning pace required in current times? Are we really prepared to embrace such technologies advancement?
Our syllabus and teaching style is decades old. If the pace of educational content does not match with the technological advancements, we might be going to miss the bus sooner than later. A simple common sense will corroborate this fact. Our education system is producing by large Techno-Kulies, let us accept the same. It is high time that it needs revamping.
Experiential Learning Content is the answer. By far, the same is not addressed in our curriculum. Innovation Mindset grooming with subjects like Idea Engineering and Design. Thinking should form part of every stream. ‘Do it’ should come before “how to do it” theory teaching. Role Modeling Sessions from adjunct faculty should become the norm.
Steve Blank in the US created a module at Stanford, called “The Lean Launchpad”. We should benchmark against the best of best practices and start from there and create world-class examples in experiential learning suited to our conditions. If done in the right way, there can’t be a better time than now for the young generation to be a tech entrepreneur and make a mass impact and contribute to building a startup nation.
